Adult Swim's Top New Show of This Year Gets a Substantial Extension for Seasons 2 and 3.
Last October, the late-night programming block debuted a new season of its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. But, shortly thereafter, the channel unveiled a brand-new animated series with a strikingly different vibe. Haha, You Clowns emerged as sweet and soothing, evoking a animated take of a serene talk show. At a time often defined by dark humor, this show's earnestness struck a chord and turned it into a breakout hit.
A Major Commitment
On December 18th, the network confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for two more seasons. This provides creator Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to further explore the world of the Campbell family. The show centers on three respectful teenage brothers whose central trait is their profound affection for their widowed father, with Cappa portraying for all four key characters.
"I’m so grateful to the viewers of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and helped it grow," said Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for seasons to come."
A President's Endorsement
In the same announcement laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and oddly captivating." He specifically highlighted the fans who embraced the show and advocated for its peculiarly charming appeal.
"All of you got behind this new show, rooted for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Wholesome Alternative
When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a gentle counterpart" to other adult animated fare. Viewers found something deeply soothing about watching this endearing family go about their simple existence.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa shared his hope to evolve comedy past its prevailing layer of irony. He attributed this trend to various cultural shifts.
“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we keep returning to,” noted Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we must laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
Future Seasons
With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa could potentially catalyze that change he described. At a minimum, the renewal guarantees audiences more opportunities to bask in the warm glow of the beloved Campbell clan.
The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. The entire series is available for streaming on HBO Max.
