The daughter of ex- South African Head of State Jacob G Zuma has denied all charges to terror accusations at the beginning of her trial in the port city of Durban.

Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, 43 years old, is being tried over statements she made on online platforms four years ago during fatal protests in South Africa that came after the apprehension of her dad.

A week of disorder in multiple regions of the country in mid-2021, including plundering and arson, resulted in at least three hundred killed and resulted in damage worth an projected 2.8 billion dollars (£2.2 billion).

The defendant has been accused of encouraging this unrest and faces allegations of incitement to commit terror acts and public violence.

Background of the Legal Matter

The unrest were concentrated in the regions of Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal province and came after the ex-leader's arrest for defying a legal directive to testify at an inquiry into accusations of impropriety while he was serving as president.

Ms Zuma-Sambudla has always denied the charges against her, with her lawyer in the past calling the prosecution's legal argument as unsubstantiated.

She has also consistently claimed the allegations against her were an effort to address political scores with her parent after he established his own political organization and campaigned against the African National Congress.

Endorsement and Court Representation

This was reinforced by the Jacob Zuma foundation, which said the proceedings was an "abuse of power" and a "systematic campaign" of "politically motivated and familial harassment" against the previous head of state and his family.

A small number of followers from her group, uMkhonto weSizwe, gathered outside the provincial high court, while her dad and other organization officials attended the hearings inside.

Her legal team has argued that the proof presented by government lawyers is insufficient and fails to provide substantial grounds for a criminal finding.

Key Points of the Legal Proceedings

  • Online comments from four years ago form the foundation of the government's argument
  • Violent protests in recent years resulted in major fatalities and financial losses
  • The accused confronts multiple charges of provocation to violence
  • Judicial trials are anticipated to carry on for multiple weeks

The legal proceedings continues as the prosecution and defense present their cases before the court in what is projected to be a carefully observed legal battle with major policy implications for South Africa.
