For the Cashier Who Made Me Absolutely Speechless – My Hat's Off to You

It was a day of rest, and I found myself sufficiently irritable, filling up my mother's vehicle. This was a common fuel stop that also functions as a supermarket, meaning there's a chance of joining a queue people bearing baskets of pricey provisions. A terrible fate to occur when all you want is to get gasoline and leave. Dreadful.

I was fourth in the waiting line. A single employee working, a female attendant. A peculiar quality in her demeanor. After the ditherer at the first position had completed payment for his Viakal, his pastry, and some breakfast items, It seemed to me I heard the cashier bid him an excellent day. Unusual. Could be I misunderstood, or maybe she did say it and was being sarcastic. I wondered if she could even be an ally in the war on delays, reflecting my irritation for people who hold up people just getting gas including me.

Taking a step forward, now third in line. The next shopper of our group completed her gasoline purchase with impressive quickness. Again, the phrase came: “I hope you have a fantastic day.” To be precise, it was “have a wonderful day”. Someone from the US? Here in Stourbridge? She had the accent, and hardly anyone here wishes anyone those exact words, or even just a nice day. Very rare. It's uncommon to find many Americans knocking around Stourbridge, certainly not working in petrol stations or elsewhere.

Second in line at last. Following a senior shopper dealing with a protracted effort with her shopping cart, her purchases, her handbag and her rewards card. This took an eternity. When she was done, the woman also was wished a wonderful day. Clearly an American. I could have confirmed it by cracking a joke at the cashier, to see if she did that reaction their typical stare, stoically, and reply with genuine earnest: “You are very amusing.” However, nothing occurred of anything hilarious to utter.

In the end, I embraced the genuine warmth – or an impersonation of it, that equates to the same thing – with which she looked me right in the eye, to my very core, and told me an awesome day. It improved my mood. It was a good thing.
