Giants QB Wilson Fires Back at Ex-Mentor Sean Payton Regarding Quarterback Comments
New York Giants signal-caller Russell Wilson didn't mince words on online platforms this Tuesday, responding to recent comments from his former coach Sean Payton.
"Classless... but not surprised...," Wilson stated via social media. "Didn't realize you're still offering rewards 15+ years later through the press."
Wilson's remarks pointed to the infamous bounty scandal issue from 2009 to 2011, when Payton led the New Orleans Saints.
At that time, the NFL determined that the Saints had incentivized team members for making aggressive tackles on rival teams. Consequently, Payton received a suspension from the league for a full year.
The Cause of the Latest Exchange
The quarterback's reaction came after Payton delivered comments after Denver's historic 33-32 victory over the New York. Payton remarked that the team had "found a little spark" with their new QB, who has taken over Wilson as the starting quarterback.
Moreover, Payton hinted that he had informed team owner John Mara that he would rather playing against Wilson over Dart.
"I spoke to John Mara recently and I said, 'We hoped that change would've happened well after our game,'" Payton commented.
Background of the Wilson-Payton Partnership
- The quarterback joined the Broncos from Seattle in 2022 and inked a five-year, $245 million extension.
- The team finished 4-11 in his first season before Denver brought in Payton, who was returning to the sidelines after a stint in broadcasting.
- Payton benched Wilson late into the 2023 season, a decision that prevented the quarterback from suffering an injury.
If Wilson remained on the team by March 2024, his $37 million pay for the following year would have been guaranteed. In the end, Wilson was released, ending the ugly split between the player and his mentor.
