Italy's Watchdog Criticizes Lift Ticket Price Hikes as Totally Unreasonable
Italian consumer advocates are sounding the alarm over what they describe as completely unjustified cost hikes for lift tickets this winter season, warning that skiing could become an exclusive privilege for the wealthy.
Substantial Price Increases Throughout the Country
From the majestic Alps and breathtaking Dolomites in the northern territories to the ski runs of central Italy, prices are set to rise by up to 40% compared to prices from three years ago, according to recent analysis.
The prestigious Dolomiti Superski pass, which provides entry to all 12 resorts in the premium Dolomite area, will now cost skiers €86 per day during the current winter. In Roccaraso, a single-day lift ticket is expected to reach €60, following substantial visitor surges last season.
Seasonal Pass Costs and Supplementary Charges
At the same time, annual skiing tickets will range from €755 per adult in the Abruzzo region to upwards of €1,800 in the northern Aosta area.
The expense of hiring winter sports gear has similarly risen, along with lodging costs and restaurant prices throughout alpine destinations.
Watchdog Leader Cites Unjustified Increases
The consumer association president, heading the watchdog organization, emphasized that the price increases—attributed by resorts to higher energy costs, resort maintenance, and demand for better equipment—were entirely unreasonable and not acceptable.
"Particularly since inflation in Italy are managed effectively and utility costs, which had increased expenses for ski resort operators in 2022, have stabilized at previous levels," Melluso noted.
The president further stated that prices have now reached levels where less wealthy individuals are being forced to abandon their traditional settimana bianca, or ski holiday, completely.
Tourism Decline and Broader Context
Melluso observed a sharp decline in alpine visitors during the current winter period, with a million fewer domestic visitors hitting the slopes compared to the prior season due to rising costs.
Despite these increases, Italy remains a cheaper option for skiing enthusiasts in the European region compared to neighboring Switzerland, French destinations, and Austrian locations.
International Event Background
The growing concern over skiing costs comes as the nation gets ready to host the Milan Cortina Winter Olympics between the first three weeks of February. The nation's top diplomat, the foreign affairs official, recently stated that Italy had presented a plan to the United Nations urging a "global truce" during the international event.
"Through the Winter Games we must similarly convey a message of peace and dialogue... to halt conflicts during the Games," he declared.
