That Gory Cartoon Movie Ending That Lingers Viewers
Out of every mature cartoon movies I have ever viewed, nothing has stuck with me quite like the terror-laced ending of the explicitly bloody as well as deeply subversive 2022 movie The Unicorn Wars.
Back in the year 2015, this Spanish filmmaker developed a grim, melancholy and frequently brutal universe that included several minor , forlorn hints of hope.
Although The Unicorn Wars appears as it stemmed from a drive to push the medium further, the filmmaker stated that it was actually a try to express a widespread, cross-cultural message about “the shared root of every conflict.”
That idea is conveyed by means of a group of vividly colored bears , openly inspired by a famous series of cuddly characters.
Maturing in a culture focused on warmongering and the war machine, many of these creatures are consumed by slaughtering the mythical beasts, due to a holy book that claims the bears they used to be masters of the woodland, before these creatures drove them out.
A few haven’t fully accepted the indoctrination, , prefer to experiment with drugs and mate outdoors.
In contrast to their gentle counterparts, these colorful critters display sexual organs and obvious sex drives.
For a particular particularly cruel, skeptical animal, the bear named Bluey, the war against the unicorns transforms into a road to power — and especially to authority over his gentler, more compassionate sibling the bear Tubby.
Bluey behaves aggressively and an apparent psychopath , and when horror takes over his unit and claims his fellow soldiers individually, he takes increasingly power on his own behalf, through ever more violent, damaging approaches.
At the same time, the unicorns are experiencing their own horror, in the form of a growing, destructive monster in their woods.
“At the beginning, it feels like a lighthearted film,” the filmmaker commented. “But then it becomes a more serious and melancholic film. And by the end, it becomes a scary feature.”
Unicorn Wars starts out resembling among the whimsical films by a legendary animator, which find a mischievous joy in permitting cartoon characters curse, shoot each other, or have intimate relations.
Subsequently it turns into more akin to a bleaker movie from that artist, with increasingly visual gore , a noticeable connection to the real suffering of war.
Ultimately, it becomes a complete extreme drama bloodbath.
The horror that makes this a perfect Halloween movie starts a lot earlier than indicated.
The Unicorn Wars is ideal for the most dedicated lovers of violence, for enthusiasts of intense movies who desire to see a movie they haven’t ever watched previously, and who can handle a narrative that pulls unflinching brutality.
See it with the lights off without any distractions, and the finale will dig into your mind and linger.
