The East African nation Takes Back Historic Items Following a Long Residence in German Hands
Exactly 12 cultural objects were officially returned to the Ethiopian nation after being kept by a German family for over ten decades.
The items, originally gathered in the 1920s by the German diplomat to the Ethiopian empire Franz Weiss and his spouse his partner, were delivered on this past Wednesday to the Ethiopian Studies Institute at Addis Ababa University.
This assortment contained royal crowns, shields and paintings, each considered as culturally important in the country.
"These items still stand as a mark of the enduring and friendly connection between the German nation and the Ethiopian people," stated Germany's envoy, the envoy to the East African country.
Professor a professor, whose parent was delivered during the household's diplomatic posting in Ethiopia, delivered the items at a event attended by the Minister of Tourism Selamawit Kassa.
He stated that the family's aim to give back the artefacts was to "showcase their appeal with the public and maintain the culture and history connected to my father's birth."
The items were either considered donations or acquisitions, as stated by the family.
"I would like to thank the Weiss relatives for actively expressing their sincere affection for the nation by carefully preserving these artifacts and crucially ensuring their homecoming to their rightful nation," said the official.
She noted that the items would in the near future be made accessible to the general audience for research and scholarly work, calling the action a significant step in protecting Ethiopia's historical legacy.
"Initiatives will continue to bring back historical objects that are held in the custody of private persons and entities throughout the globe," she affirmed.
In the era of imperial control in Africa, numerous of traditional items were looted.
This demand by the continent's states for the return of looted artefacts has been answered with certain success in the past few years - although some artefacts are only on short-term display.
Back in 2022, Germany was the initial state to give back a portion of the famous Benin artifacts to the Nigerian people in an attempt to deal with its "dark legacy."
