The White Sox Sign Star Hitter Munetaka Murakami on a Lucrative Two-Year Contract.
In a notable move for their overhauling roster, the American League club have officially added slugger Munetaka Murakami, agreeing to a $34 million contract bringing in the power-hitting player.
Contract Details and Player Perks
The contract includes a $1 million signing bonus, issued within 30 days, combined with compensation of sixteen million for the 2026 season and $17M for the final year.
Additionally, Murakami's compensation can increase based on accolade achievements in 2026:
- An additional $1M for being named the league MVP award.
- Half a million dollars for finishing second or third in MVP voting.
- A quarter-million for finishing in the top ten.
- An identical bonus for earning the top rookie honor.
The contract includes that he cannot be assigned to the minor leagues without his permission and makes him a free agent at the termination of the contract. Extra provisions include a team-provided interpreter and flight reimbursement between the U.S. and Japan.
Compensation and Team Legacy
As part of the acquisition, Chicago owes a compensation payment of over $6.5 million to the Tokyo Yakult Swallows, Murakami's longtime team in Japan's Central League. The Swallows would also receive a additional payment of any triggered performance bonuses.
Murakami will become the fourth player from Japan to represent the Chicago franchise, following pitcher Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), infielder Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and outfielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Notably, Takatsu once managed Murakami while both were in Japan.

Murakami, a left-handed hitter who turns 26 soon, enters a young lineup in Chicago that also features prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The club are finished with a difficult season, finishing last in the AL Central but representing a 19-game improvement from the prior campaign.
Having earned league MVP honors in '21 and '22, Murakami made history with a record-breaking 2022 season where he belted 56 home runs, eclipsing the longstanding record for a Japanese-born player previously held by legend Sadaharu Oh. Over his eight-year tenure with the Yakult club, Murakami has compiled a .270 batting average with 246 home runs, 647 runs batted in, and 977 strikeouts in nearly 900 games. He started playing mostly at first base, he has more recently played to third base.
International Pedigree
Murakami's heroics were on full display during the 2023 WBC. In the penultimate game against Mexico, he drove in a walk-off two-base hit that scored Shohei Ohtani and Masataka Yoshida for a dramatic 6-5 win. The next night in the championship game against the Team USA, he hit a tying home run in the early innings, paving the way for Japan's eventual championship win.
