This Swine Life: Hog Named 6-7 Pardoned by Miami-Dade Leader.
It might not have been at the identical stature as granting clemency to holiday birds, but the county's top official experienced a presidential-style act this week by formally pardoning the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava executed the holiday gesture at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the center of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“This pig is innocent. She is worthy of this pardon. Her criminal record is spotless,” stated the mayor in a speech with inescapable allusions to the extraordinary and sizable number of pardons issued from the start of the commencement of a second term in office.
“Unless you count eating half a dozen apples per day,” the mayor added. “May this pig enjoy a lengthy and joyful existence away from worry.”
This ceremony, simultaneously observing and challenging the region’s Hispanic tradition of eating roast pork during the holidays, was established to emulate the yearly bird sparing at the White House.
The swine, contributed by a local firefighter, was given its name from the current slang trend of young people shouting “six-seven” – originating from a rap song lyric – often for no discernable reason. The craze became so ubiquitous that a prominent word reference recently made “six-seven” its top term for the year.
A Peaceful Retirement
The pardoned swine is now set to enjoy its days at a farm sanctuary “away from grills and cookware”, according to the ceremony's official statement.
“This swine clemency has become one of our favorite ways to open the end-of-year celebrations,” said the event host, in a decidedly positive message.
“It captures the character of Miami: joyful, diverse, and based in heritage that foster togetherness. Each year, we are honored to observe tradition and kindness in a way distinctively Miamian.”
Attendees enjoyed a meat-free selection of spinach croquetas and Cuban coffee as they celebrated the swine's new lease on life.
