Walmart Implements Purchase Limits on Pokémon Trading Cards

In a significant move, Walmart has begun enforcing strict limits on how many Pokémon trading card items customers can acquire during one shopping trip. This new rule was activated as of early November, based on a company memo shared with employees.

Addressing Scalper Activity

Although not formally announced by Walmart, many believe this decision was prompted by a widely shared social media clip that showed a customer purchasing a massive amount of Pokémon card products at a checkout counter. The store manager featured in the video faced significant criticism for allowing the bulk transaction to proceed.

Rule Specifics and Possible Weaknesses

The new restriction states that shoppers may only buy a maximum of five trading card boxes or packs each time they enter. Yet, the language has raised questions due to its vagueness. Precisely what counts as a "box" remains unclear, and whether someone could still purchase five high-value Elite Trainer Boxes remains ambiguous.

Moreover, since the limit is tied to each visit, in theory an eager reseller could make multiple trips—purchasing the maximum each time—to gather large quantities throughout the day.

The Reseller Crisis

To most players, such efforts might seem over the top, but for scalpers, it's common behavior. In recent years, scalpers have significantly added to widespread shortages of Pokémon cards, driven by the TCG's growing fame.

Some resellers seek to resell sealed items at a markup, while others search for rare cards that can fetch extraordinary prices. For instance, a specific Mega Evolution card from the latest set has been listed at prices exceeding eight hundred dollars in online marketplaces.

Looking Ahead

This policy change aligns with the imminent release of the Phantasmal Flames set, coming on November 14th. Pre-release sales indicate premium cards like the Charizard mega evolution being offered for around fifteen hundred dollars, emphasizing the persistent interest and likely scalper target.

With any luck, the retail limits will help reduce mass buying and improve availability for true fans and casual players as well.
