What We Know Concerning the Those Lost of the Bondi Beach Terror Attack

No fewer than 16 individuals were killed and more than 40 were hurt when assailants fired on a Hanukah celebration at Bondi Beach, an attack Australian police are describing as a terrorist attack.

In the latest update, officials have announced the death toll is 16, including one of the alleged gunmen. Furthermore, 42 people with injuries were admitted to the hospital.

Those who died are still awaiting formally identified, but police believe their ages span between 10 and 87 years old.

Below are the individuals who are known to date.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Described as a father-of-five, he served as the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and acquaintances described him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a family member asked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their newest son just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, according to his wife.

She told the events before the attack, stating they had been standing together when the shooting erupted. “He moved to protect me because he wished to be near me,” she recalled.

The couple were both Holocaust survivors, having faced unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had later immigrated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

French foreign ministry have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

Publicly, the Foreign Minister expressed that France mourned with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must eradicate,” the statement continued.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was taken to the a children's hospital is among those who had died, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was a fatality in the incident, according to multiple sources citing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

From the 42 people taken to hospital, a significant number remain under care, with five in critical condition. The injured comprise two officers who responded to the attack.

One of the injured is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to confront one of the gunmen. Hailed as a hero, he received gunshot wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. It has been reported he was hurt and is receiving treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he described the scene as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also praised the actions of those who came to assist. He said he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the attack. He described he heard “a large number” of shots.

“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
