Why Los Blancos Possess 'Total Confidence' in Teenager Pitarch
Whenever a 18-year-old makes club a historic moment in a key European tie against Manchester City, it inevitably draws praise and the spotlight.
During his maiden start in the tournament - and fifth game for the club - Thiago Pitarch made a strong impression as the fifteen-time European champions secured a three-nil last-16 first leg lead at the Santiago Bernabeu.
The teenager, who also made his club debut in the play-off round a few weeks prior with a cameo off the bench at Sporting Lisbon, then helped Los Blancos overcome the English champions in the midweek return to secure a last eight place.
At 18 years old, Pitarch was the team's youngest player to begin two matches in the Champions League's latter rounds, surpassing star Vini Jr's previous mark by a week and a half.
A Meteoric Rise From La Fabrica
The midfielder is the latest to come through from the club's academy and is quickly establishing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most exciting protegees.
He signed for Real from CD Leganes in the summer of 2023, having previously been with Atletico Madrid and Getafe youth teams, and initially featuring for the under-19 side, where he rapidly created a strong impression.
He progressed to the B team and it was during a pre-season game in which they played against the senior squad, then coached by the former defender, where the youngster is said to have caught the attention of the current Real boss, who replaced Xabi Alonso in the new year.
Spanish media would later label the moment as "an instant connection," noting Pitarch stood out not only for his skill on the ball, but for the energy, character and drive he brought to the team.
'His Greatest Quality Is His Personality'
In the summer of 2025, ex-manager Alonso invited the youngster to practice with the senior squad and gave him playing time during the warm-up matches.
Yet, it was the change in manager that proved the defining moment in his career as he was introduced as a second-half replacement in both ties against Benfica that set up the meeting with Manchester City.
"I've dreamed of this each night when sleeping, the first day I started playing the game, each day you head to training and each day you play a match," stated the player following his debut.
"I've just fulfilled my dream with the best team in the planet and in the best competition."
Handed a starting debut in the Spanish league against Getafe - where he spent four years after moving from Atleti in 2018 - he has retained his place for the following four as fitness issues to Jude Bellingham and Dani Ceballos created an opportunity.
Pitarch has seized it with performances that have belied his age and experience.
"He is a very quick player, and you can observe his capabilities," remarked the coach. "He's extremely energetic, with great endurance, work-rate and movement."
Pitarch's mentality has also stood out to his coach.
"His greatest quality is his character," added he. "He constantly demands the possession, and even under pressure, he doesn't feel it.
"I realize people are surprised to see him make his debut in a Champions League match, but he is selected because I had total trust in him to perform what he usually does.
"Thiago will keep receiving chances with the first team. It's a pleasure to coach a talent like him."
A Future International Decision
Pitarch was born in Fuenlabrada, in the Spanish capital's community, and was raised fully immersed in Spanish football, progressing through youth setups before entering the club's famous youth academy.
He holds both Moroccan and Spanish citizenship, offering him the choice to play for either country at the highest level.
According to Fifa eligibility rules, players may appear for multiple nations at youth level without being locked in, with the ultimate choice only binding once they appear in a official full international.
Pitarch has played for Spain at underage levels, turning out for both the under-19 and U20 sides, and participated in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where La Roja reached the last eight.
Nevertheless, he has not yet decided to any full national side, who are monitoring his progress with interest.
In a recent interview, the player said: "I haven't made my final decision so far. Things are great with Spain, but I will reach a decision in the near future."
His situation echoes that of other bi-national talents such as Real team-mate Diaz and Barcelona forward Yamal. Whereas teenage Lamine opted for Spain, Brahim opted to represent the Atlas Lions.
Focus on the Future
For now, his attention is on establishing himself in the Madrid lineup and rewarding Arbeloa's faith.
He played over an hour in the two-one win at the Etihad, which completed a 5-1 overall triumph and a quarter-final matchup with Bayern Munich.
He was replaced by another academy player in Manuel Angel underscored Arbeloa's trust in younger players to aid the club pursue trophies to come.
Following his notable contributions to date on the Champions League, Pitarch is tipped to play a key role in that.
"The manager treats me the same. We handle it very naturally. I try not to overanalyze it too much - I have to earn my minutes on the pitch," he said following the win at Manchester.
